Each clip has been reviewed by a number of consultants who have discussed whether each is used in the Deaf Christian community. This consultation has so far been limited so we welcome your feedback on the signs in our collection.

This website is not meant as a definitive guide to signs used in church, but is a “working document” of signs that we see. We need to add more signs, especially variations on the signs that we already have. We therefore want your feedback about the signs that you use so that we can add them to the website.

With each sign we have indicated the type of church setting that you might see this sign used. This is decided from what each Deaf signer on the site has indicated, and also in our consultation with Deaf people. You may use a different sign in your church - please let us know! We need your feedback so we can increase the range of signs on the website and the information given with each one. We can only improve the site and the accuracy of the information given with each sign with your help!

Interestingly, in the process of collecting these signs and phrases, we expected to find specific regional as well as denominational differences. What we found was that the signs shown cannot, in general, be identified as coming from one specific region. Some of our consultants suggested this could be because Deaf Christians of different denominations often meet together nationally, so signs become similar throughout the UK. If you know specific regional Christian signs, please let us know as it will help our research process.

Please also feed back to us about the denominations (types of church) where you see Deaf people using different signs. We have tried to separate some signs into denominations but you may see different signs used in your church denomination or may feel that your denomination doesn’t use some of these signs – please let us know.
